Pure water and ultrapure water, unlocking the unkown secrets of the volcano unknown!

At the Institute of Geophysics in Paris, France, volcanic system researchers have long studied the evolution of volcanoes.

They regularly survey active volcanoes around the world, take the rock samples collected at the site to the Institute's Paris laboratory for chemical conversion, and analyze them by ion chromatography or ICP-MS. These analyses are performed in pure water and ultrapure. Completed with the help of pure and ultra water.

Important applications of pure water and ultrapure water in experiments

1. Atypical sample weighing

In solid sample preparation laboratories, the quality of irregularly shaped rock samples is not easily determined, so we need to measure in water. To do this, we need to use ultrapure water with a density of 1g/cm3, otherwise the measurement will not be possible.

2.Thermal hydrolysis of volatiles

After the sample preparation is completed, thermal hydrolysis is required. The institute has two thermal hydrolysis systems, one for extracting halogens (such as fluorine, chlorine, bromine) and sulfate from volcanic rock or soil samples, and another for extracting boron.

Ultrapure water is essential in the thermal hydrolysis process! When the flask is heated, water vapor combines with the halogen gas in the sample to form an acid. When the acid is recondensed in the flask, it can be measured by ion chromatography, and if it is boron, it is measured by ICP-MS. After the halogen is extracted, the hydrazine is cleaned with hydrofluoric acid, first rinsed with pure water, then returned to the furnace, and then rinsed with pure water until there is no halogen.

Ultra-pure water, even with extremely small amounts of elements, can have an impact on the experiment – especially when we measure boron. Without good quality pure water, we can't get accurate experimental results.

3.Ion chromatography observation peak

The halogen ions previously extracted by thermal hydrolysis are sent to the IC chromatography laboratory for measurement. Once again, water plays an important role in the preparation of eluents using ultrapure water.

For ion chromatography, the quality of ultrapure water is critical. For example, the presence of fluorine, chlorine or nitrate in ultrapure water can cause deviations in the measurement results.

In the ion chromatography laboratory, we need to clean the suppressor regularly. Premium ultrapure water extends the life of the ion exchange membrane, which means we don't have to spend 1,500 euros per month to replace the suppressor. Using ultrapure water as the water supply, the suppressor can be used for 3 to 4 years.

4.Analysis of boron traces by ICP-MS

Trace analysis of boron samples was performed by ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry).

The boron of the pyrolysis solution is measured directly, so the blank level should be as low as possible. So we need to rinse the probe and system with ZYP pure water and dilute it if necessary. After the measurement is completed, the ICP-MS system must be rinsed very carefully, first with a 2% acid solution of acid and ultrapure water, then with ultrapure water.

In conclusion

In all the experimental work of the institute, high-quality pure water and ultra-pure water are the basis of all experiments and research.

ZYPFT pure water system is simple and convenient to operate. It can always provide reliable and stable pure water and ultra-pure water, so we don't waste time by repeating experiments due to water quality, which greatly improves our work efficiency and reduces the experiment. Cost, save time and save money
